One model was designed before implementation, the other emerged from working code. Understanding why both exist—and when to reach for each—reveals something fundamental about the gap between theory and practice.
Where bits become real—electrical voltages in copper, light pulses in fiber, radio waves in air. The Physical layer is networking's foundation, where every packet must cross from the abstract into the physical world.
Layer 2 is where devices learn each other's names, catch corrupted messages before they spread, and turn the chaos of shared wire into ordered conversation. It's the neighborhood layer—local, trustworthy, and essential.
